Emily Monteros Neeland

February 4, 1948, to October 2, 2022

It is with the deepest sadness, that I inform you that our classmate Emily Monteros Neeland passed away this morning, at their home in Citrus Heights, California. She passed away peacefully at 10:55 AM, surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren. Emily had been struggling with lung cancer over the last year and a half.

As some of you know, Emily loved working with fabrics and was a consummate artisan with crafts. She was a member of the American Sewing Guild and was always active with that society. She was also an avid gardener who spend many wonderful hours tending to her special Garden.  She and her husband John A. Neeland (Jay), jointly operated their business and were active members of the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce.

Emily is survived by her husband, children Daniel, and Tamara (Webb), and seven grandchildren. Pre-arrangements were made with the Neptune Society and her body has been transferred to the Sacramento Cremation Society. No services are planned at this time and the family will be making arrangements for a private service at a future date.

Additional information will be provided when and if they become available. The family welcomes your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

My condolences to Emily's family.

My favorite memory is her trying to coach me in my kitchen, giving me remedial lessons for the Pretty Woman routine , as I was a very uncoordinated pom-pom alternate. Still makes me laugh. She was so darling.

The Emily in my memories was one of those people whose wings grew early; she wanted to embrace and experience life with tremendous enthusiasm.  Which is exactly what she did.  Condolences to her family for their loss - and wishes they embrace Emily's example as they continue with their own lives.

Emily was a wonderful lady, who cherished lovingly the friendships from her youth in Nogales. Her WHOO HOO!! Birthday grretings were unique to her on our web site, and they brought us great joy. They will be deeply missed. She was a loyal friend to the end. Thank you for the memories dear friend, and may you be at eternal peace.
For us who remain to grieve Emily's passing, I have included the verse above which was offered by a Hospice Chaplin at the conclusion of a memorial service that I recently attended. I hope you find it conforting during these sad days. May God Bless Emily, her family, and us all.

Emily and I were the only two girls in the percussion section of the Nogales High Band. Because Joey Ezzo, Ricky Aranda and David Matiella were so fabulous and played snare drums at every event, Emily and I traded off the bass drum and the cymbals, the triangle , maracas, chimes and whatever other piece of percussion came our way. We marched around the football field and all of Nogales streets in our oversized band attire banging away, being responsible for everyones left/right, left/right. We traveled to many an out of town game and the annuel Tucson Rodeo on our infamous band bus, singing 99 bottles of beer on the wall, stopping long enough to eat at Lucky Chicken. I never remember having one disagreement with Emily. Considering that I think we were both rather opinionated, I have deducted that we liked each other pretty much!  She sounds like she was a very talented and lovely person. My sympathy to all who loved her

Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories live forever.  Malik Faisal

I have known Mami since 7th grade.  We have shared all of the ups and down of our life.  I have a recent voicemail from her which I will not delete.  She was suffering so much.  She was gasping before being able to say a single word.  I know that she is finally at peace!  I cherish my memories of her.

I had forgotten about Emily playing the bass drum in band.  I sat next to her with my tuba and she kept me on beat.  I had previously played French Horn (next to Terri Uribe) but the French Horn is always off the beat and I was always screwing up, so Mr. Schwartz told me one day - "Go play a scale on the tuba" and I did and he said "Ok, if you want to stay in band, you have to play the tuba!".  So he put me next to the bass drum and that's where I stayed until we graduated.  Emily always had a smile.  We actually lived near each other on Hudgins when we were in 6th grade.  Ned and I were able to visit her and Jay in California when we lived there.  She will be missed!  Rest in peace!
